Reported speech/help
Message from mohammad51 posted on 09-07-2019 at 21:14:02 (D | E | F)
Hello
Please could you help with this sentence ?
Direct speech >> “My mum told me to come home.
Indirect >>> She said (that) her mum told her to go home.

I noticed it was answered online and copied it here.
Why do they change 'come home to go home' ?
Thanks for any reply.

Hello
With said in a past tense, it should have been :
She said (that) her mum had told her to go home.
Come in the mother's mouth means to come to her. That action reported by a third person can be seen as go but come wouldn't have been wrong

Hello!
A strange direct speech and a strange indirect speech too, in the original sentences!

Please could you help with this sentence ?
Direct speech >> “My mum told me to come home.(1)
Indirect >>> She said (that) her mum told her to go home.
I noticed it was answered online and (I?) copied it (t)here.
Why do they change 'come home to go home' ?

I totally agree with gerondif !

(1) In the direct speech it should be: My Mum said to me: "Come home!"
Indirect speech: She said that her Mum had told her to go home!

Hello
I agree with you both.
That " come home" becomes " go home" when it is reported by a third person.
Then the writer or one who conveys the reported speech said:
She said that her mum had told her to go home. I see Go home is better than " come home" because she goes not comes.
The mother asked her saying " come"
It is answered online in one a good site.
Many thanks for you both.
